Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team spilt its season series with Santa Clara. The Gaels won game one of today's doubleheader by a score of 10-1. Saint Mary's dropped a heart breaker in game two as Santa Clara's Nori Kamada hit a walk-off grand slam to give the Broncos a 8-7 lead. The Gaels finish the weekend with a 16-26 overall record and 2-2 conference record.
Saint Mary's was the designated visiting team in today's matches. They came to bat in the top of the firth inning and loaded the bases. Megan Galloway then came to bat with two outs and struck a double into left center scoring Bronwyn Russell and Lauren Mello.
Santa Clara cut the lead in half as they scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. The Gaels added a run in the third inning when Sandra Ruezga got on base and scored after the Gaels hit back-to-back singles.
Saint Mary's poured it on in the fourth inning as they scored five runs. Molly Bergeson and Russell managed to get on base for Mello. The senior slugger hit a three run homer. After a single by Sadie Dolcini, Ruezga got in on the long ball action as she hit her second four-bagger in two days.
In the top of the sixth, Galloway came up with one out. She scored the Gaels ninth run of the ball game as she hit a ball that jumped out of the yard as soon as it hit the bat. Jenna Smith scored later that inning to give the Gaels a 10-1 lead.
Galloway not only finished the day with three hits, three RBI and a homerun; just a triple short of a cycle, she also earned the complete game victory in the circle. Only one unearned run crossed the plate in game one. The right handed hurler only gave up one hit through six innings and only three on the game.
Game two started similarly to the first. The Gaels matched good pitching with some pop on the offensive end. The scored five runs in the first two innings. Ruezga and Galloway singled in Russell and Mello, respectively in the first inning. Ruezga came around to score later that inning off of a Santa Clara error. In the second inning Bergeson got on base and scored on a wild pitch. The Gaels scored their second run of the inning when Ruezga singled in Russell.
Kate Albaugh, game two's starter, looked good early. She did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. The Broncos plated two unearned runs in that inning.
Saint Mary's got one run back as Chelsea Loftis led off the inning with a double down the left line. Loftis would come around to score on a single by Smith.
Santa Clara scored its third run of the game on a homerun by Kamada in the fifth inning.
The Gaels responded with a homerun of their own in the sixth inning. Mello got a hold of a ball and sent it over the right field fence. This was Mello's second round tripper of the game.
The Gaels led the game 3-7 going in to the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately for Saint Mary's they could not hold on to this lead. The Broncos found the right holes to get the bases loaded. They walked in a run to make the score 4-7. Kamada then hit her second homerun of the game, a walk off grand slam to give the Broncos the 8-7 victory.
The Gaels will return to action next week when they travel to Stanford, CA to face off against local powerhouse the Stanford Cardinal. They will then play in their second weekend of PCSC action against Portland State. The Gaels will host the Vikings for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday will be senior day for the Gaels. Four seniors will play in their final game at Cottrell Field.
