Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team won its final home game of the season today against the Portland State Vikings. The Gaels split today's doubleheader after dropping the first game 6-0 and winning game two 11-1. The Gaels improved to 3-1 against the defending PCSC champion Vikings. Today was the final home game for four Gael seniors. These seniors were honored before the start of game two. Saint Mary's improved to 20-28 on the season and 5-3 in conference play.
The Gaels dropped game one 6-0. The Viking offense tallied a run in all but one inning. The Gaels offense could not get it going in the first game. They recorded six hits but could not plate a run against PSU's Mandy Hill. Megan Galloway recorded two hits for the Gaels.
The Gaels got on board in the top of the first inning. Bronwyn Russell drew a walk and then stole second. She came around to score on a double by Galloway.
The Gaels offense did not strike again until the fifth inning. Molly Bergeson started the inning off by getting on base. The Gaels then hit four straight singles and scored four runs. The Gaels had batted eight in the inning and taken a 5-0 lead.
The offense was not quite done. They came back in the sixth inning to score six runs while sending 12 to the plate. After Michelle Mathis led off the inning with a single Bergeson hit a triple. The next four Gaels all reached base safely. The Gaels recorded seven hits in the sixth inning.
The Gaels were now up 11-0 and would go on to win the game 11-1 in sixinnings.
Today was the final home game for four seniors. Kate Albaugh pitched her final home game today and was phenomenal. Albaugh gave up only one run and one hit as she earned her team leading sixth victory of the season. Albaugh pitched 5.1 innings of no-hit softball. The Vikings finally got a hit in the final inning before Albaugh closed the door.
Senior Lauren Mello recorded two hits and scored two runs in game two today. The senior hit her team leading seventh homerun this series. Her seven homeruns put her in a tie for first in the Gaels record books for homeruns in a single season.
Michelle Mathis started both games at shortstop. She recorded two three hits with a run and an RBI today. She struck two singles in the same inning today for the Gaels during their sixth inning explosion.
Lauren Gardner got the start in game one today. The senior southpaw is second on the team with five win on the season. She struck out her fifteenth batter of the season in game one.
The Gaels will now hit the road for three straight conference road series. Next weekend the Gaels will travel to San Diego, CA to play the USD Toreros.
