MORAGA, CA - The University of San Diego softball team recorded a doubleheader win over Saint Mary's College after a two hour rain delay Saturday afternoon from Cottrell Field. The Toreros won game one by the score of 7-3 and defeated the Gaels 5-1 in game two. USD improves to 18-16 overall and 6-2 in PCSC while the Gaels drop to 4-35 overall and 0-8 in conference. San Diego is now a half game behind Portland State.
In game one, Saint Mary's got on the board early, scoring one run in the top of the first. San Diego came back to rally for six runs on three hits in the bottom of the first to take the lead. The Gaels would add one more in the fourth and another in the sixth but this was not enough as San Diego would take it by the score of 7-3.
In game two, the Toreros exploded in the bottom of the fourth for four runs on two hits to defeat SMC 5-1. Saint Mary's lone run came in the sixth.
Defensively for San Diego, Christina Haake pitched six full innings allowing seven hits and striking out four batters. In game two, Gina McFarland pitched a complete game allowing six hits and striking out two batters.
San Diego returns home against Sacramento State University this upcoming weekend for more conference action. Game one on Saturday is set for noon at the USD Softball Complex.
