SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team (19-17, 3-4 PCSC) recorded a pair of victories in Sunday's triple-header against the Santa Clara University Broncos (10-36, 3-4 PCSC). The Toreros captured game one 3-0, while the Broncos took game two from USD 2-1, and came back to win 5-0 in game three.
In game one, the Toreros jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on two hits. Nichole Valenzuela scored on a bases loaded walk for Danielle Treiber. Jennifer Ellenbeck was then walked scoring Carey Casciola.
In the seventh inning with Valenzuela on second base, Virginia Fritsch doubled to right centerfield allowing Valenzuela to score the final run for the 3-0 victory.
In game two, it was a pitchers duel as both teams played scoreless through five innings. San Diego finally punched a run through in the sixth inning. With Fritsch on second base and Treiber on first base, Ellenbeck singled through the right side and advanced to second base on the throw while Treiber advanced to third safely and Fritsch scored.
The Broncos responded scoring one run in the seventh inning to tie the game and send it to extra innings and then scored the winning run for Santa Clara in the eighth inning.
In game three, San Diego jumped out to a commanding lead in the first inning going up 4-0. With the bases loaded and two outs, Alicia Massei hit a three RBI double in the inning. USD scored the fifth run in the fifth inning for the 5-0 victory.
Defensively for the Toreros, Katie Jo Nelson picks up the loss for game two and the win in game three moving to 4-9 on the season. Jennifer Ellenebeck picks up the win in game one moving to 8-3 overall.
The Toreros have one more game left on the schedule Sunday afternoon, before wrapping up the series Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Marsalli Park.
