USD Unable To Hold On, Lose 10-7 to SDSU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team (20-18, 4-4 PCSC) dropped their final non-conference game of the season to cross town rival San Diego State University (26-18) 10-7 at the SDSU Softball Stadium Wednesday night.

The Aztecs broke the ice in the second inning scoring two runs on two hits taking an early lead.

In the third inning, USD responded with four runs of their own. Carey Casciola hit a hard single to second base which was muffed allowing Casciola to get on base. Kathleen Bonja followed with a ground out to first base advancing Casciola to second base. Virginia Fritsch hit a single to shallow centerfield allowing Casciola to advance to third base. Danielle Treiber hit an RBI single to left field scoring Casciola cutting the Aztec lead 2-1. Jennifer Ellenbeck took a free base after being poked in the arm. With bases loaded, Alicia Massei singled to left field scoring Fritsch and moving Ellenbeck and Treiber ahead one base. Stacy Compton hit a ground ball down the third base line to the Aztec pitcher who tossed the ball to the catcher forcing Ellenbeck out at home. Kaslin Tucker hit a hard single into the outfield scoring Fritsch and Treiber giving the Toreros their first lead of the game 4-2. The inning ended on Nichole Valenzuela's at bat when Tucker was tagged with a runners interference call.

The Aztecs responded cutting the lead 4-3 scoring one run in the bottom half of the inning. USD followed with three runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead. The Aztecs came back to capture the lead in the bottom half of the inning scoring five runs putting them at 8-7. The Aztecs scored a single run in the fifth inning and one more run in the sixth inning for a 10-7 final over the Toreros.

Offensively for USD, Alicia Massei led the team hitting 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Virginia Fritsch hit 2-for-3. Carey Casciola hit 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Defensively for San Diego, Christina Haake tallied the loss moving to 7-7 overall. Starting pitcher Jennifer Ellenbeck worked three innings giving up seven hits.

The Toreros return to the diamond this upcoming weekend to continue conference action hosting Saint Mary's College with doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at noon and 2:00 p.m. at the USD Softball Complex.
