SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team (21-19, 4-6 PCSC) recorded a split in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against the Saint Mary's College Gaels (21-29, 6-4 PCSC) dropping game one 4-5 and winning game two by a score of 4-2.
In the second game on the day, San Diego held the Gaels scoreless through five innings while tallying one run early in the second inning. San Diego then posted three more runs in the third innings.
The rally started when Kathleen Bonja singled to right field. Virginia Fritsch took base on balls moving Bonja to second base. Danielle Treiber reached on an error by the shortstop advancing Bonja and Fritsch ahead loading the bases for Jennifer Ellenbeck who slammed a ball into deep center field. The Gaels outfielder bobbled the ball allowing Bonja and Fritsch to score and Fritsch and Ellenbeck advancing one extra base. With runners at second base and third base, Alicia Massei grounded out to shortstop. Stacy Compton hit a sacrifice fly allowing Treiber to score for a 4-0 lead. The Gaels responded with one run in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh but were unable to post anymore runs than that.
In game one, USD had a 3-0 lead through the fourth inning. Their lead was extinguished when on a controversial call at home plate lifted the Gaels to a five run fifth inning. San Diego was unable to recover losing 5-4.
Offensively for USD, Virginia Fritsch hit a combined 3-for-3 with one double, one RBI, and two runs scored. Kaslin Tucker hit 3-for-6 with one double and two RBI. Kathleen Bonja hit 3-for-6 with one RBI and one run scored.
Defensively for the Toreros, Jennifer Ellenbeck falls to 9-4 overall pitching 4.1 innings striking out five batters. Christina Haake picks up a win improving to 8-7 pitching a complete game striking out four batters in 7.0 innings of work. Katie Jo Nelson made an appearance pitching 2.2 innings in relief striking out four batters.
The softball team continues conference play against Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader starting at noon at the USD Softball Complex.
