Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team split their Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader with the Loyola Marymount Lions Saturday afternoon from Cottrell Field. The Gaels defeated the Lions 3-2 in game one with Chelsea Loftis throwing a complete game to earn her second victory of the season. Saint Mary's dropped game two by the score of 6-5 to LMU which moved them to 23-17 on the season and 3-4 in PCSC play. After the split, Saint Mary's improves to 5-37 overall and 1-10 in conference.
In game one the Gaels combined for three runs on seven hits to earn a 3-2 victory over the Lions. LMU got on the board first, scoring one run in the first when Kirsten Slouber singled to right field and came home on Margo Pineda's fielder's choice.
Saint Mary's was able to answer with one run in the bottom half of the third. Lauren Mello pounded a two-out single to reach base before coming home on freshman Kayla Aldridge's first base-hit of the game.
Loyola would add one more in the sixth but it was not enough as the Gaels would come back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Lauren Mello belted a two-run double to score Sandra Ruezga and Bronwyn Russell. Ruezga reached on a base-hit up the middle and advanced on a ground-out while Russell drew a walk.
Offensively, four Gaels combined for seven hits with Lauren Mello posting a perfect 3-for-3 effort with two RBIs in game one. Ruezga was 2-for-3 with a run scored while freshman Lauren Clark and Kayla Aldridge tacked on a hit a piece.
Sophomore, Chelsea Loftis threw a gem of a game, allowing two runs on nine hits and fanning three. She walked just one in seven innings from the circle.
The Gaels suffered a heartbreaking loss in game two, falling 6-5 after exploding for 11 hits in eight innings against the Lions. Loyola posted four runs in four and a half innings before SMC got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth. Senior Justine Larsen singled through the left side to reach base. Sophomore Bronwyn Russell followed up with a triple to right center field to score Larsen and get the Gaels on the board. Marcia-Marie Euker then nailed a sac-fly to center field to score Russell from third and bring Saint Mary's within two.
Saint Mary's held LMU for an inning and a half before tallying two more runs in the seventh to tie the score at 4-4. Larsen belted her second base-hit of the game to reach base with Shelly Taketa coming in to pinch run. Russell drew a walk and then advanced when Euker sac-bunted to advance both base runners. Clark brought in Taketa on a fielder's choice and Russell scored on an error by LMU's right fielder.
LMU came back for two runs on two hits in the top of the eighth inning which was too much for the Gaels who only managed to muster up one run in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Eleni Papailias singled down the right field line and then scored on Bronwyn Russell's third base-hit of the game.
Offensively, Bronwyn Russell led the way, adding a stolen base to her 3-for-4 effort from the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Kayla Aldridge went 2-for-4 in game two while senior Justine Larsen posted a perfect 2-for-2 effort with a run scored in game two. Shelly Taketa (1-for-2), Marcia-Marie Euker (1-for-3), Lauren Mello (1-for-4) and Eleni Papailias (1-for-4) tallied the other hits for the Gaels.
Megan Galloway started from the circle for the Gaels, throwing the first 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out one. Lauren Gardner added 1 2/3 innings, accounting for one run on two hits and striking out one. Relief pitcher, Kate Albaugh was tagged with the loss, throwing the last three innings and giving up two runs on five hits and fanning two.
Saint Mary's returns to action tomorrow when they wrap-up the four game series with the LMU Lions. The PCSC doubleheader is scheduled for Noon from Cottrell Field.
