SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team hosted Sacramento State University at Marsalli Park in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play Saturday afternoon. In game one of their doubleheader, the Broncos came out swinging, but were defeated 12-3 by the Hornets.
Santa Clara came out in strong fashion in the first inning. After senior Angela Kabanuck reached on a fielders choice, Sara Overmier launched a two-run home run over the fence in centerfield to give Santa Clara an early 2-0 lead.
But starting in the third inning, the Hornets put together three big innings in a row. Three singles in the third inning tied the game 2-2. Then in the top of the fourth inning, Jackie Morales issued a walk with the bases loaded to break the tie, and then a single by the next batter added two more runs, making the score 5-2.
Sacramento State did not let up, as Kalya Meeks kept the Broncos off the bases, and then in the top of the fifth, the Hornets scored four more runs, knocking Morales out of the game in favor of freshman Kaitlyn Rauschnot.
In the sixth inning, Rauschnot kept Sacramento State off the scoreboard, but the Broncos were unable to capitalize, leaving the bases loaded.
With the score 9-2 in the seventh inning, the Hornets weren't done. With one out, Ashley Grove mishandled a routine groundball and then Sacramento State put together a total of four more hits including two doubles to increase their lead to 12-2.
The Broncos responded in the last of the seventh, with Meghan Chavez going yard with one out to decrease the lead to 12-3. After a single by Overmier, Morales roped a double to the gap in right field, but the nine run deficit was too much to overcome.
The Broncos have another contest with the Hornets this afternoon before concluding the series with another doubleheader Sunday at Marsalli Park beginning at 12:00 p.m.
