San Diego, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team swept today's doubleheader against the San Diego Toreros. The Gaels scored a handful of runs in the fourth inning of game one before taking the game by a final score of 5-0. Game two was a thriller. The Gaels earned their fifth walk-off win of the season when they won game two in ten full innings. The Gaels improved to 23-29 on the season and 8-4 in PCSC play. They have won their past two conference series.
Game one of Sunday's doubleheader was similar to game one of Saturday's competition. The Gaels would use a five run inning to propel them over the Toreros. The Gaels also got another big start from Senior Kate Albaugh. Albaugh, who flirted with a no-hitter in her last start, picked up where she left off. She earned the complete game shutout and only allowed three hits. She leads the win with seven wins on the season.
With the game scoreless the Gaels came up to bat in the bottom of the fourth. The Gaels took advantage of some shaky San Diego defense and run producing singles by Molly Bergeson and Bronwyn Russell as they scored five runs.
Russell continued to shine in conference play. She hit two singles and a double with a run and three RBI. Russell, the conference play stolen base leader, added another bag to her ledger in the first inning.
The Gaels found themselves down 2-0 going in to the bottom of the sixth inning when Megan Galloway led off the inning. Galloway got a hold of a pitch and struck her seventh homerun of the year. This blast tied Galloway for the all-time single season homerun record.
After USD added a run in the top of the seventh the Gaels found themselves down 3-1 with only three outs remaining. Russell walked and came around to score when Lauren Mello hit a ball that was misplayed by the shortstop. This error not only put the Gaels within one run, but it Mello on third base. Mello would tie the ballgame at 3-3 when she scored on a passed ball.
The game remained scoreless until the tenth inning when USD took the lead on a double by Virginia Fritsch. The Gaels came up to bat having already recorded a walk-off in four games this season and they were ready to do it again. Kayla Aldridge scored the tying run on a single by Katherine Delpit. The Gaels then loaded the bases for one of their hottest hitters. Russell got the job done as she hit a sac fly to plate the winning run.
Senior Lauren Gardner earned her sixth victory of the season today. She pitched all 10 innings and gave up only three earned runs. Gardner has proven herself in extra inning ballgames this year. She won an extra innings game earlier this season against nationally ranked Oregon.
Bronwyn Russell continued her conference success today. In game two her recorded two hits including a triple. She walked three times and recorded the game winning RBI. She is batting .462 in conference with a team leading 18 hits. She has scored a team leading 12 runs.
