Los Angeles, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team dropped a doubleheader against the Loyola Marymount Lions. The Gaels dropped the first game by a score of 3-1 and lost the second game by a score of 8-0. Senior Lauren Mello set the single season homerun record in game one as she powered her eighth homerun of the season.
The Lions got on board in the top of the first inning in game one. Pitchers dominated the rest of the game. Both squads did not put up another run until the sixth inning. The Lions added two runs in the top of the sixth after a walk and a homerun. The Gaels added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Lauren Mello hit a two out homerun.
Senior slugger Mello now owns the Gael record for homeruns in a single season. She set the record today as she hit her eight round tripper of the season. She currently has 13 career homeruns, which puts her in third place. She is one shy of tying Jenn Arnold for second all-time. Claudia Williams sits atop the list with 18 career bombs.
The Gaels gave up five runs in the top of the first inning in the second game. Two innings later LMU added two runs on a homerun. They scored their eight run of the ballgame on a bases loaded sac fly.
Today LMU clinched the PCSC title and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Lions and the Gaels were competed for the title this weekend and LMU out-hit and out-pitched the Gaels to earn a trip to the NCAAs.
