Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team dropped both games of their PCSC doubleheader against Sacramento State Sunday afternoon from Cottrell Field. In game one, the Gaels were ousted 11-1 by the Hornets before falling 4-0 in game two. With the doubleheader loss the Gaels move to 5-45 on the season and 1-15 in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference.
In game one, Sacramento State put their bats to work, pounding out fourteen hits with six coming in the second inning when they brought in four runs to bring the score to 6-0. They added a pair of runs in the third before the Gaels got on the board in the top half of the fourth inning. Megan Galloway scored on a passed ball after drawing a walk and advancing on Justine Larsen's fielder's choice. The Hornets tallied two more runs in the third and three more in the fourth to down the Gaels 11-1.
South paw Lauren Gardner started from the circle for the Gaels, throwing the first 1 1/3 innings and allowing five earned runs on six hits. Sophomore Chelsea Loftis came in for 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up five runs on two hits.
Sacramento State's Cassie Cervantes started, allowing just one run on one hit and fanning nine batters. Michele Bochenski came in for 1 1/3 innings of relief, also giving up a hit.
Senior Eleni Papailias tallied the first hit for the Gaels in game one when she smashed a double to center field to lead-off the top half of the third inning. Senior Marcia-Marie Euker added the other hit for SMC when she singled up the middle to lead-off the top of the fifth inning.
In game two, Saint Mary's held Sacramento State scoreless for the first five innings before the Hornets exploded for four runs on three hits in the bottom half of the sixth inning to defeat the Gaels 4-0.
Pitcher Nikki Cinque led off the inning with a single through the left side before advancing on Amy Jo McKenzie's sacrifice fly to center field. Cinque scored on an error which allowed Sacramento's first baseman to reach base. Britney Crine singled to center field to bring home Caoagan and reach base. Katie Rhoe who was pinch running for Crine advanced on a passed ball and scored on a double by Gloria Toledo who then scored on an error.
Freshman Marlena Green threw the first 5 2/3 innings from the circle, giving up seven hits and striking out one to get tagged with the loss. Sophomore Megan Galloway added 1/3 inning of relief, allowing no runs on no hits.
Saint Mary's returns to action Saturday May 6 when they travel to Santa Clara to face the Broncos in their final Pacific Coast Softball Conference series. The first game is scheduled for Noon from Marsalli Park in Santa Clara.
