PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of San Diego softball team falls to 22-20 overall and 8-8 in conference against the first place Portland State University Vikings as they completed the postponed game two of the four game series losing 2-1 in ten innings. Then followed with a doubleheader losing game one, 3-1, and game two, 5-1.
San Diego took the Vikings into extra innings in the continuation of game two starting back up tied 1-1 in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Portland State managed to get a run across capturing the win over San Diego.
In game one of Sunday's doubleheader, USD's Nichole Valenzuela led off with a triple down the right field line putting her in scoring position. Kathleen Bonja followed with an RBI double scoring Valenzuela bringing the Toreros with in one run of tying, 2-1. But USD was unable to bring across another run falling 3-1.
In game two the Vikings jumped out to an early lead scoring four runs in the third inning and scored one more run in the fifth inning taking a 5-0 lead. USD attempted a comeback when in the seventh inning, Ashlee Nunes led off with a single. Bonja then belted a double down the left field line advancing Nunes to second. Sara Mason singled through the right side moving Bonja and Nunes ahead one base. Gina McFarland then hit into a fielders choice back to the pitcher moving all runners one base where Nunes was thrown out at home plate. Alicia Massei grounded out to at first base but not before Bonja was able to cross home plate. However, the Toreros were unable to mount a comeback as they fell 5-1.
San Diego gears up for their final series of the season as they take on Loyola Marymount University this upcoming weekend. On Sunday, the Toreros will honor their departing seniors in a pregame ceremony. The series will begin on Saturday, May 6 at noon from the USD Softball Complex.
