Sacramento, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team opened its final weekend of competition today when they hit the road for a doubleheader against the Sacramento State Hornets. The Gaels fell in the first game by a score 5-1. They fell in the second game by a score of 2-1. The Gaels held both games close, but they lost via the walk-off both games.
The first game was very close despite the 5-1 score. Bronwyn Russell scored the first run of the day when she gave the Gaels the 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Hornets evened the game in the bottom of the fourth when they tied the game at 1-1.
Megan Galloway kept the Gaels in the game until the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh Sac State got to the Gaels. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for the Hornets before they hit a walk-off grand slam to win the game by the score of 5-1.
The Gaels were neck and neck with the Hornets in the second game. Sac State scored first on an unearned run against the Gael starter Chelsea Loftis. Loftis kept the Gaels in the game and the Gaels went on to tie it up. Lauren Clark singled and came around to score. Clark went 2-3 on the day.
With the score 1-1 the game went in to extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth Sac State hit their second walk-off of the day. A batter was hit by a pitch and then scored after two singles in the eighth.
The Gaels return to action tomorrow for their final doubleheader of the season. The Gaels will close out the season tomorrow at Sac State. First pitch is slated for Noon.
