Santa Clara, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team suffered a doubleheader loss to the Santa Clara Broncos Saturday afternoon from Marsalli Park in Santa Clara. The Gaels lost game one by a 6-2 ledger before dropping game two by the same score. With the pair of losses, Saint Mary's moves to 5-47 on the season and 1-17 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference action.
In game one, Santa Clara got on the board first, tacking on all six of their runs before the Gaels scored in the top half of the fifth inning. Senior Shelly Taketa drew a walk before advancing to third on Justine Larsen's double to center field. Taketa came home on the next play when Sandra Ruezga grounded out to the second baseman. The Gaels tacked on one more run in the top half of the sixth inning when Marcia-Marie Euker singled to left field to reach base and then advanced on a passed ball and an error by the catcher. Lauren Mello singled to right field to score Euker and take first base. It was not enough however, and the Broncos would take game one by the score of 6-2.
Sophomore hurler Chelsea Loftis threw six innings for the Gaels, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs to get tagged with the loss.
Offensively, four different Gaels tallied the five hits in game one with senior Justine Larsen leading the way with her 2-for-3 effort from the plate. Marcia-Marie Euker was 1-for-4 with a run scored while Lauren Mello was also 1-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Lauren Clark (1-for-3) also tacked on a hit for the Gaels while Sandra Ruezga added an RBI.
In game two, the Gaels fell 6-2 after getting out-hit by the Broncos 11-7. Saint Mary's scored early, tallying one run in the first when freshman Lauren Clark hit a bomb over the center field fence. Santa Clara answered with four runs on four hits in the second followed by two more runs in the fourth innings. Saint Mary's tallied one more run in the top half of the fifth when Euker singled to right field and then stole second base. She came home on Lauren Clark's second hit of the game.
Megan Galloway was tagged with the loss, throwing the first three and 2/3 innings for the Gaels, allowing six runs on seven hits and striking out four. Lauren Gardner added two 1/3 innings of relief for SMC, allowing four hits and walking none.
Offensively, freshman Lauren Clark led the way for the Gaels, adding a run scored and two RBI to her 2-for-4 effort from the plate. Freshman Sadie Dolcini was also 2-for-4 in game two while Marcia-Marie Euker (1-for-4), Lauren Mello (1-for-4) and Shelly Taketa (1-for-2) tacked on the other hits for SMC.
The Gaels will wrap-up the four game series with the Broncos tomorrow with another PCSC doubleheader from Marsalli Park. The first pitch is scheduled for Noon.
