Sacramento, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team played in their final competitions of the 2007 season today when they hit the road to play a doubleheader against the Sac State Hornets. The Gaels dropped the first game by a score of 9-1. They then won their final game of the 2007 season by a score of 5-0. The Gaels finished the 2007 season with a final record of 24-36 and a final conference record of 9-11.
The Hornets stung first in game one when they scored four runs in the top of the second inning. A walk, three singles and a triple did the damage for Sac State in that inning.
The Hornets would tack on five more runs in the top of the fifth. The Hornets took advantage of some Gael errors as three of the five runs were unearned. These were the last runs of the ballgame. The game ended with a final score of 9-1 in favor of the Hornets.
Senior Lauren Gardner got the nod for the Gaels in the final game of the 2007 season. Gardner got the complete game shut out as she kept the Hornets off the scoreboard to earn the seventh win of the season. The southpaw only allowed four hits in all seven innings of work.
The Gael offense also sparked up in their last game of the season. The Gaels scored five runs on 20 hits. Galloway doubles and advanced to third on a wild pitch in the second inning. She would come around to score on a sac fly by Sadie Dolcini. Ruezga and Lauren Clark would single and come around to score the next two Gael runs on a double by senior shortstop Michelle Mathis.
After scoring three in the second they would add another run in the bottom of the third. Lauren Mello would walk and come around to score on a fielding error by the right fielder. The Gaels would add their fifth run of the game after singles by Lauren Clark, Chelsea Loftis and Molly Bergeson would score pinch runner Melissa Barretto.
The Gaels would go on to win that game by the score of 5-0 to earn their 24th win of the 2007 season.
