Softball Picked Fourth in Pre Season

Portland, OR - The Saint Mary's women's softball team was recently picked to finish fourth in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference. The Gaels earned a third place finish in the PCSC in 2007, posting a 9-11 record conference record and 24-36 overall record.

"The team has been working hard all fall into this year and we are excited to get the season underway. As a team, we have high expectations and we are working hard every day with PCSC play in mind," said head coach Jessica Hanaseth.

The Gaels will throw the first pitch of the 2008 season on February 9 at 12:00 PM at Cottrell Field, Saint Mary's will face the Sonoma State Seawolves in a double-header.

Saint Mary's return a handful of key contributors from their 2007 squad, including three-time All-PCSC selection Bronwyn Russell. Russell, who enters her senior season, has accumulated many accolades while playing in a Gael jersey. Her achievements include; PCSC Freshman of the Year (2005), PCSC First Team (2005, 2007)), PCSC Second Team (2006), and numerous academic awards.

Two other Gaels join Russell this season with all-conference awards under their belt. Senior Sandra Ruezga returns for the Gaels at first base, after earning PCSC Second Team honors following her performance in 2007. Rounding out the accolades is senior Megan Galloway. Galloway was named to the PCSC Honorable Mention in 2007, as she played a crucial role for the Gaels at both the pitching and outfield role.

Defending champion Loyola Marymount was picked to repeat as Pacific Coast Softball Conference champions in 2008, according to the 2008 PCSC Preseason Coaches Poll released Friday. The Lions garnered four-of-six possible first-place votes and 34-of-36 possible overall points.

Sacramento State was picked to finish second, with first-place vote and 27 points overall. The Hornets were followed by Portland State with 23 points,Saint Mary's (CA) was picked fourth with 17 points, followed by San Diego with 14 points, and Santa Clara with 11 points. The Broncos also received one first-place vote.

The poll is conducted by the six PCSC head coaches. A first-place votes is worth six points, five points for second place, four points for third place, three points for fourth place, two points for fifth place, and one point for sixth place.
