Feb. 9, 2007

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team departed Friday morning for their 2007 season opener at the UC Riverside Invitational. The Toreros will face San Jose State, Northern Colorado, and UC Riverside. San Diego finished 2-2 in the tournament last year with an 8-2 victory over Saint Mary's, a 5-12 loss to Riverside, and splitting two games against San Jose State, 3-5 and 3-1.

USD opens the tournament with a game against the San Jose State Spartans. Saturday, the team will face Northern Colorado at 11:00 a.m. followed by UC Riverside at 1:00 p.m. Then will face San Jose State again on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.

The Toreros look to improve upon their winning ways last season having won a record 18 Division I wins, finishing with the most conference wins in the programs history, and improving on their team high batting average of .271, the highest since San Diego's 1998 season.

"Our pre-conference schedule is very challenging and will prepare us to compete for the PCSC title and a post season bid," said head coach Melissa McElvain.

The Toreros first game of 2007 is scheduled to begin at 12:00 from Amy S. Harrison Field on the Campus of UC Riverside.
