This Week In Gaels Softball: The Saint Mary's softball team will return home to face the California Golden Bears on Wednesday, March 8 from Cottrell Field. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 pm. The Gaels will then take the weekend off before hosting two doubleheaders at home and playing one away next week.
Taketa Earns All-Tournament Honors: This past weekend senior outfielder, Shelly Taketa was named to the All-Tournament team of the Indiana State Tournament for good reason. Taketa posted a .312 (5-for-16) average over the weekend, smashing four doubles and a home run in five games. Taketa also posted a team-high six RBI on the weekend and tallied 12 total bases. Overall, Taketa is third on the team with a .275 (11-for-40) average and tied for first on the team with seven RBI and two home runs. She has also banged out a team-high five doubles. Her best performances this past weekend came against Indiana State when she went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and three RBI in two game against the Sycamores.
Newcomers Making Their Mark: True freshman, Marlena Green took advantage of her second collegiate start by posting the second victory for the Gaels against Eastern Illinois. She threw the first complete game of her collegiate career when she shut out the Panthers 9-0 and held them to just four hits. Over the weekend, she posted a 3.11 ERA on a 1-0 record. She allowed just four earned runs and struck out four in nine innings from the circle. Overall, Green leads the Gaels with a perfect 2-0 pitching record.
Freshman, Lauren Clark took advantage of her last five starts, coming in second on the team with a .444 batting average in tournament play over the past weekend. She finished with eight hits in eighteen at-bats, smashing two doubles and bringing in two runs. The Modesto native boasted a .556 slugging percentage in the last five games and tallied two runs scored.
Last Time Up:The Gaels wrapped up the Indiana State Tournament with a 1-4 record with their lone victory coming against Eastern Illinois on Saturday. Freshman hurler, Marlena Green earned the win for the Gaels, throwing her first complete game and shutting out the Panthers 9-0. Saint Mary's were edged by one run in a 10-9 loss to host Indiana State and a 5-4 defeat by Eastern Illinois on Sunday. Saint Mary's out-hit Eastern Illinois 9-6 but were held to just four runs by the Panthers.
Scouting the Golden Bears:The Number 7 ranked California softball team comes off of a 13-2 record after competing in the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament this past weekend. The Golden Bears played three games on the weekend despite having two cancelled. They shut out all three competitors by the score of 9-0 (Mississippi Valley St.), 6-0 (Mercer) and 8-0 (FIU). Senior, Haley Woods was named MVP of the tournament finishing the weekend going 8-for-10 with five home runs including a grand slam. Freshman pitcher, Lauren Frankiewicz improved to 5-0 on the season, striking out six in the Bears' win over Mercer on Sunday.
Second Year Head Coach Jessica Hanaseth: Jessica Hanaseth enters her second season as the head coach for the Saint Mary's softball team. Hanaseth took over the position last year after being a part of the program as a coach and player for the past eight seasons. She served as an assistant coach for the Gaels for three years with her duties varying in all aspects of the game. Hanaseth worked with infielders, outfielders and hitters in her three years as an assistant and was in charge of recruiting and community service. Hanaseth, a 2001 graduate of SMC with a degree in Health Physical Education and Recreation with a teaching emphasis, finished her playing career second in RBI (84), third in doubles (19), and eighth with a .284 career batting average.
Next Time Up For The Gaels: After taking the weekend off, the Gaels will host two doubleheaders at home before traveling to University of the Pacific next weekend. On Tuesday, March 14 SMC will host Southern Illinois in a non-conference doubleheader from Cottrell Field. The first pitch of game one is slated for 1 pm with game two following at 3 pm. On Wednesday, March 15, Saint Mary's will face Southern Utah at home in another non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is set for 1 pm with game two following at 3 pm. On Saturday, March 18, softball will travel to Stockton, CA to face the Pacific Tigers from Bill Simoni Field. The first pitch of game one is slated for noon with game two following at 2 pm.
