SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior Virginia Fritsch sent a solo bomb over the left field fence in the second inning, but the Toreros were unable to score again in a 4-1 Aztec victory over San Diego at USD Softball Complex on Wednesday night. The Toreros fall to 7-10 while the Aztecs improve to 12-8.

Following Fritsch's homer in the second inning, Danielle Treiber a bloop single to right. The Aztec pitcher shut down the Toreros the rest of the way, retiring the next 16 batters until Treiber reached on an Aztec fielding error in the seventh inning.

San Diego State posted four unanswered runs in the third, fourth, and seventh innings to take the 4-1 victory.

"We need to play consistent defense behind our pitchers and finish plays," said head coach Melissa McElvain. "Christina Haake and Katie Jo Nelson both effectively set up their hitters and pitched out of some jams tonight."

Treiber and Fritsch were the two Toreros to record hits, and Fritsch records her first homerun of the season.

"Virginia is swinging a hot bat with a crucial homerun for our team tonight," commented McElvain. "She sat on that pitch well and got all of it."

USD returns to the diamond for three games this weekend starting Saturday with a single game against Cal-State San Marcos at noon at the USD Softball Complex.
