SAN BRUNO, Calif.-University of San Diego freshmen utility/pitchers Kailey Hill and Paige Von Sprecken have been respectively named the West Coast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week in the sport of softball, the conference office announced Monday.
Hill batted .438 (7-for-16) in four victories, while posting an on-base percentage of .526 and a slugging percentage of 1.500. Her seven hits were spread out almost evenly throughout the six games, having recorded a one hit performance in every game but the finale when she went 2-for-3 including a triple and home run in San Diego's 2-1 win against the University of Connecticut.
She opened the weekend with a home run in three at-bats in a 1-0 win against Bryant University and then followed with a 1-for-3 effort with two runs scored in a 5-4 victory over Western Carolina. The Toreros then stumbled to San Jose State 12-6 where Hill managed one hit in two plate appearances. She tallied one of USD's nine hits in its 6-1 win over Utah Valley, including a home run to centerfield, and in the nightcap she notched the Torero's lone score in their 2-1 loss to Weber State. She closed the week with seven hits, six RBI, five home runs, two walks, and one hit by pitch in San Diego's 4-2 outing in its own Classic. Hill also etched her name in USD's record book by setting the freshman record for home runs in a season. She has nine and the previous record was seven held by Taylor Hensely, 2009.
A native of Ramona, Calif., this is Hill's first career weekly award.
Von Sprecken went 4-1 in the circle over the course of five appearances last week, posting an earned run average of 0.83. In 25.1 innings fanned, she struck out 25 batters, and allowed three earned runs. Her three complete games tossed were of distinction, against Bryant (1-0), Von Sprecken threw a shutout while allowing just four hits and a pair of walks for her ninth victory of the season. Over Utah Valley (6-1), she limited the Wolverines to just four hits in the ballgame as she struck out 10 en route to the complete-game victory, and against Connecticut (2-1), she handed the Huskies their fourth consecutive loss of the season. Von Sprecken time in the batters box was equally impressive, in seven plate appearances; she drew three walks, two hits, and one RBI with a .500 on base percentage.
The Yorba Linda, CA, native earns her second weekly award of her career as she was first honored on February 9, 2015.
