SAN BRUNO, Calif.-Brigham Young University catcher Sydney Broderick and University of San Diego pitcher Paige Von Sprecken have been respectively named the West Coast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week in the sport of softball, the conference office announced Monday.
Broderick's bat and defensive play helped the Cougars to a 3-1 weekend, including a sweep of Oklahoma State. The sophomore catcher out of Ashburn, Virginia, hit .667 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored while drawing five walks as the Cougars took the series 2-1, 10-2 and 10-2, ending the final two games in five and six innings, respectively. Broderick notched an .833 slugging percentage with an .818 OBP. She also caught two runners stealing. In the bottom of the sixth of the first game against the Cowgirls, Broderick hit a double into left center that drove in the eventual game-winning run as BYU beat Oklahoma State to take the first game in the series in the Cougars' home opener. Broderick earns her third career weekly honor, and the third BYU player to receive the player of the week accolade this season.
von Sprecken went 3-0 in the circle over the course of five appearances last week, posting an earned run average of 0.00. In 19 innings fanned, she struck out seven batters, allowed zero earned runs, and did not give up a single run to help San Diego go 5-0 for the week. She began the week by tossing five scoreless innings of three hit ball against Buffalo. The following day von Sprecken earned her first career save by pitching two innings of scoreless relief against Columbia. On Saturday, she pitched the best game of her career, allowing just two hits in ten shutout innings against Harvard without walking a batter.
