SAN BRUNO, Calif.-- Brigham Young University catcher Sydney Broderick and University of San Diego Paige von Sprecken have been respectively named the West Coast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week in the sport of softball, the conference office announced Monday.

In four road wins, Broderick batted .562 with nine hits, including three home runs, while adding nine RBI, six runs scored and 24 put outs behind the plate. She posted a slugging percentage of 1.312 in 16 at bat appearances, and increased her season batting average to .400 in the Cougars wins over Utah State and Saint Mary's this past week. Despite notching two hits in Tuesday's 13-2 win at Utah, the catcher drove in two runs, notched a home run and recorded three RBI in five innings of work. In the three game series against Saint Mary's, Broderick went a combined 7-for-12 with six RBI and four runs scored. With her performance, the reigning WCC player of the week guided BYU to a 3-0 league mark with 7-3 (10 innings), 3-2, and 8-5 victories against the Gaels.

von Sprecken went 3-1 with a 2.15 ERA last week, picking up all three wins as San Diego swept Pacific to start league play. She began the week by giving up just two earned runs in 6.2 innings at Santa Barbara in a losing effort. She bounced back with a three hit shutout in the WCC opener against Pacific helping the Toreros win 3-0. Von Sprecken followed up that performance by allowing four earned runs in six innings of work in game two of the doubleheader; she didn't issue a single walk as USD won 7-6. von Sprecken closed out the week by allowing just two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings to help the Toreros sweep the Tigers with a 4-2 win. The right hand pitcher now has 18 wins on the season, which is the most in the nation by a freshman. The Yorba Linda, California, native collects her fourth career weekly honor.
