This Week in Softball: The Saint Mary's softball team will play in their final games of the 2007 season this weekend. The Gaels will travel north to face off against the Sacramento State Hornets. The Gaels and the Hornets are scheduled to compete in a set of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday from Sacramento, CA. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
Last Time Out: The Gaels faced off against the Loyola Marymount Lions. The Gaels and the Lions were the top two teams in the PCSC. The Lions took the series as well as clinched the PCSC title and the NCAA bid that accompanies it. The Lions out pitched and out hit the Gaels in all four games of the weekend. The bright spot for the Gaels came in the third game when Lauren Mello hit her eighth homerun of the season, giving her sole position of the top spot in the Gael record books.
Homerun Race: Senior Lauren Mello broke the single season homerun record this past weekend when she belted her eighth round-tripper of the season. Megan Galloway is second on the team with seven long balls. Both Mello and Galloway will have one more weekend of competition to add to their respective ledgers.
Scouting the Hornets: The Sacramento State Hornets will enter the week with a 17-32 overall record. The Hornets currently have a half game lead over the Gaels for second place with their 8-7 record. This past weekend they took three games from San Diego. The offense is led by Jamie Schloredt. She leads the Hornets with a .374 average, 27 RBI and six homeruns. In conference play Schloredt has five doubles and two homeruns. Kayla Meeks handles the majority of the pitching. She is 10-12 this season with a 3.41 ERA. In PCSC play she has a 5-3 record, an ERA of 3.00 and 32 strikeouts.
Coming to an End: The softball season is coming to an end. Although the team has one more weekend of competition they have already had quite a turnaround season. The Gaels have already won 18 games more than they won last season. They have won more conference games this season than they have since joining the PCSC. Lauren Mello broke the single season homerun record and Megan Galloway is just one homerun shy of Mello. Earlier in the season the Gaels defeated the No. 17 Oregon Ducks in a 10 inning game. The Gaels were in the hunt for the PCSC title all season long. They fell to the LMU Lions in the second to last weekend of play before the Lions clinched the title. All-in-all the 2007 season has been a success for the softball program. The Gaels will look to add to their win total this weekend when they play their final games against Sac State.
On the Road Again: The Gaels will finish their longest road stretch of the year this weekend as they close out the 2007 season. The Gaels currently have a 3-5 record on the road trip after dropping four this weekend to LMU. They will compete in four more games against Sacramento State to close out both their 12 game road streak as well as the 2007 regular season.
Third Year Head Coach Jessica Hanaseth: Jessica Hanaseth enters her third season as the head coach for the Saint Mary's softball team. Hanaseth took over the position two years ago after being a part of the program as a coach and player for eight seasons. As head coach of the Gaels she will work with all aspects of the game. Hanaseth works with infielders, outfielders and hitters as well as recruiting and community service. Hanaseth, a 2001 graduate of SMC with a degree in Health Physical Education and Recreation with a teaching emphasis, finished her playing career second in RBI (84), third in doubles (19), and eighth with a .284 career batting average.
Up Next for the Gaels: The Gaels will finish up the season this week against Sacramento State. The Gaels will then enjoy the last weeks of school as they look back on a very impressive year that saw them improve their wins from last season by 18 games.
