LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Tiffany Pagano was selected as the PCSC Pitcher of the Week for the 10th time in her career and the fifth time this season, the conference announced today. The junior pitcher tossed another two shutouts last weekend to lead LMU to a sweep over then-second place Saint Mary's. The wins secured the PCSC title and an NCAA Tournament berth for the Lions.
Pagano had a record weekend, breaking the LMU career records for shutouts and strikeouts in Saturday's win. On Sunday, she broke her own single season strikeout record. Her 529 strikeouts passed the previous record of 519, and her 24 shutouts is two more than the previous best of 22. Last season, Pagano recorded 205 strikeouts, and she has already topped that with 210 in 2007.
The junior from Temecula, Calif. has been unbelievable over the last few weeks, pitching four consecutive shutouts. She has a 27.0 inning scoreless streak and is a perfect 8-0 in PCSC play.
On Saturday, she allowed just three hits with nine strikeouts. On Sunday, she was one better, allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts. For the week, she allowed 0 runs in 13.0 innings with 17 strikeouts, one walk, five hits and allowed SMC to hit just .116.
This is the fifth PCSC Pitcher of the Week award for Pagano and the 10th of her career. She is now just one award shy of the PCSC Pitcher of the Week record set by Jamie Forman-Lau of Santa Clara. The former Bronco hurler won the award 11 times in her career (2003-04), including seven times in 2003.
Pagano and the Lions have already wrapped up the PCSC title, but can add to their win total this weekend as they conclude the regular season with a four-game series at Santa Clara. Doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday begin at noon.
