BYU Crowned WCC Softball Champions

SANTA CLARA, Calif.-The BYU softball team earned the West Coast Conference regular season title behind a doubleheader sweep of Santa Clara in Santa Clara, California.

The Cougars (36-10, 11-0 WCC) topped the Broncos (15-34, 4-10 WCC) 4-0 and 5-0 to secure their seventh straight championship and their 11th consecutive NCAA tournament berth.

"I'm proud of the team for finding ways today to get the job done," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "Even though we didn't play our best ball offensively, we found ways to manufacture runs and our pitching was exceptional."

McKenna Bull notched her 31st victory of the season with the shutout win, allowing three hits in seven innings while striking out nine. In the bottom of the fourth she recorded her 214th strikeout of the season, passing Paige Affleck for the most strikeouts in a season by a BYU sophomore.

Fellow sophomore Ashley Thompson (4-1) followed with a three-hit shutout of her own for her best outing of the season. She also led all Cougar hitters with a 3-for-6 performance on the day.

The Cougars will learn their post-season faith when the field is released by the Division I Softball Committee. The selections for the 2015 NCAA Division I Softball Championship May 10, 2015.

The 64-team field will be selected from 283 NCAA Division I institutions sponsoring the sport of softball. Of the 64 teams, 32 teams will receive automatic qualification with the remaining best 32 teams selected on an at-large basis.

Sixteen teams will be seeded and each of the seeded teams will be placed at one of the regional sites.
