Pacific Sweep Final WCC Softball Weekly Honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - University of the Pacific freshman pitcher Marissa Young and sophomore infielder / pitcher Cassidy Gustafson have been respectively named the West Coast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week in the sport of softball, the conference office announced Monday.

Young recorded a career-high six strikeouts to pick up a win against Saint Mary's, allowing just six hits in a complete game shutout, helping Pacific secure a doubleheader split with the Gaels, putting an exclamation mark on a perfect 3-0 record in WCC play with a 2.04 ERA, with 14 strikeouts against just seven walks and seven earned runs in 24 innings. The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native collects here second career weekly honor as she received the same honor on April 20.

Gustafson excelled against Saint Mary's, finishing the week of play with five hits and six RBI, averaging a scorching .555 while slugging .667. In the final game of the season, Gustafson knocked in three, including an RBI single to open up the scoring in the first and a crucial two-RBI double in the third inning to put Pacific ahead 4-0. On Saturday against the Gaels, Gustafson opened the scoring with an RBI single in a 5-4 win and also recorded a first-inning RBI strike in the opener of the series. Gustafson finished West Coast Conference play with a .340 average and a team-high 4 doubles and 14 RBI. The Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native earns her first career weekly honor.

This season, Pacific landed seven weekly honors with three hailing from Player of the Week, while the remaining four were from Pitcher of the Week. The Tigers finished the 2015 campaign 19-36 overall and 7-8 in league play.
