SAN DIEGO, Calif. - University of San Diego softball head coach Melissa McElvain is pleased to announce the 2008 softball schedule. USD has a challenging season ahead of them and will take on teams one by one.
"I am incredibly excited about this year's team," said McElvain. "We have a great group of young ladies who are ready to compete at every level."
The 2008 schedule features four Pac-10 opponents, three of which will face the Toreros at home, opponents from 16 different states, three conference series played at the USD Softball Complex, and opponents including Texas A&M, University of Utah, Pacific, Long Beach State, and University of Illinois-Chicago. Finally, USD will face both cross-town rivals UC San Diego twice and San Diego State three times.
In 2007, San Diego broke numerous records including tying the most number of victories in a single season with 24 and a program record of 20 overall victories over Division I teams. This years senior class include Kathleen Bonja, a 2007 first team All-Conference, Nichole Valenzuela, a 2007 second team All-Conference, Stacy Compton, and Celine Pujol.
"Our team consists of 14 veteran returners as well as six very talented incoming athletes," commented McElvain. "We also have an amazing class of incoming freshman and transfer athletes."
The Torero recruiting class consists of junior first base Lindsey Fleet from San Diego Mesa College, freshman infielder Celeste Soto, freshman catcher Taryn Keenan, freshman outfielder and pitcher Kristen Gensler, freshman outfielder Alyssa Schott, and freshman utility player Megan Walsh.
The Toreros open the season on February 8, 2008 with the first of two softball invitational's hosted by USD.
