Moraga, CA - Head Coach Jessica Hanaseth officially announced the hiring of Keith Berg stating, "I am very excited to have Keith join the coaching staff at Saint Mary's College. Keith brings a tremendous amount of experience and enthusiasm to our program and I am thrilled to have him here." Berg will guide the Gaels pitching, as well as assisting Hanaseth in running practices, travel coordination, and recruiting.
Prior to Saint Mary's Berg coached for two seasons with the North Texas Mean Green softball team as an assistant coach, working primarily with the pitchers. Berg has over 10 years coaching experience at the college, high school and club levels.
Before his arrival to North Texas, Berg spent a year as an assistant with the Northern Illinois University softball program. In just one season, the Salinas, Calif., native helped the Huskies to 10 more wins then the previous year, lowered the pitchers' earned run average from 3.41 to 2.71 and mentored second-team All-MAC honoree Lindsey LaChiana, a 16-game winner.
Berg was a successful high school and club head coach in California. His first stint as a head coach was at North Salinas High School in 2001, where he led the squad to three straight conference titles. Following the 2002 Central Coast Section Athletic Conference Championship, Berg was honored as the Northern California Coach of the Year by the San Jose Mercury.
Berg also spent five years as a head coach with the Salinas Storm organization, which he founded in 1999. He coached his first team, the 12-and under Storm squad, to a ninth-place finish at the Amateur Softball Assocation National Tournament. His teams made five trips to the ASA Nationals, including a fourth-place finish with the 16-and-under team at Panama City Beach, Fla in 2000. In 2001, Berg coached the Gold 18-and under Salinas Storm to victories against Team China and Team Australia.Berg also made a full-time living as a private instructor in Northern California. He has over 10 years of experience giving instructional one-on-one lessons in hitting, defense and pitching.
Berg received his bachelor's degree in sociology from Cal State Monterey Bay in 2001.
