- The Lions used Saturday's UC Irvine/Ayres Invitational to get back in the "swim" of things, returning to collegiate competition for the first time since the holiday break. Loyola Marymount put up some strong performances in both the sprint and distance invitationals, with the Lions finishing in sixth place in both.

"We swam the meet as a continuation of our winter training week, and most of our swimmers swam their `off' events in the sprint invitational, just to get the rust out of their pipes so to speak after the holidays," LMU Head Coach Bonnie Adair said. "I required everyone to swim one of the distance invitational events, even the sprinters, so there was good team spirit watching the sprinters take on events that they have never attempted before."

The meet provided a competitive arena for the Lions, as the field included Washington, BYU, Wyoming, Boise State, San Diego State, Cal Poly, Pepperdine, and the host Anteaters.

Senior Lauren Mathewson was the highlight of the morning for the Lions, winning the 50 backstroke (26.92) and finishing fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.96).

Freshman Mallorie Lim also posted three fast 50's in the morning session, finishing fifth in the 50 back (28.85) and sixth in the 50 fly (27.31).

Fellow freshman Trinity O'Neill had top-8 finishes in both the sprint and distance invitationals, finishing fourth in the 100 fly in 1:00.07 and sixth in the 1650 freestyle in 18:26.37.

Sophomore Rebecca Plume finished just behind O'Neill in seventh place in the 1650 free with a time of 18:30.14.

The Lions will next head south to take on UC San Diego next weekend.
