Long Beach, Calif. - Loyola Marymount swimming started the PCSC Championships with a bang on Wednesday, setting a new conference meet and school record in the 200 medley relay. Lauren Mathewson, Sarah Hamilton, Angela Samuels, and Katie Hicks teamed up to swim the relay in a first-place winning 1:45.11, smashing the previous conference meet record of 1:46.39 and the old LMU record of 1:47.31.
The record-setting time left the Lions about a second ahead of conference-favorite UC San Diego and gave LMU a great jump early at the PCSC Championships.
In Thursday morning's preliminaries, the top-eight swimmers in each event secured a spot in the evening finals. Brophy earned a spot in the 500 free with a fifth place finish in the preliminaries. Samuels also qualified for the 200 IM. But the highlight of the morning came in the preliminary for the 50 free, where LMU finished second and third in Mathewson and Hicks. With UC San Diego taking first, tonight's final will feature the Triton surrounding by two Lions in the lanes next door. The event marks the first time Mathewson and Hicks have competed head-to-head.
Mathewson and Hicks will also team up with Magura and Samuels in the 200 free relay.
Detailed results of days one and two are expected to be posted at the PCSC Championship Central at www.LMULions.com early Friday morning.
Competition continues through Saturday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif.
