LONG BEACH, Calif. - Loyola Marymount swimming posted its best finish at the PCSC Championship in program history, finishing second of 14 teams with 1049.5 points. In the conference championship's 17 swimming events, the Lions set new school records in 10 of them and new PCSC records in two.

The second place finish is the best performance for the Lions at the PCSC Championship. The mark of seven dual victories is the was also the second-highest in program history. The 2005-06 team went 9-5 in dual action, bringing the record over the last two seasons to 16-10.

"It was a perfect meet and an unbelievable performance all around," Adair said. "This was, by far, the best meet in LMU swimming history. We had personal-best performances from almost everyone on the team and it was this depth that resulted in our secord place team finish. We scored well in all 13 individual swimming events and in the five relay events. That, and the amazing team unity and spirit, is why this is such a great team."

Lauren Mathewson won a third conference title Saturday, this time in the 200 backstroke winning with a time of 2:03.78, almost four seconds under her previous school record. For her efforts, she was named PCSC Swimmer of the Year. The Lions' senior shared the honor with Northern Colorado's Nan Liu, who won the two butterfly events with new meet records.

Earlier in the night, sophomore Julia Hall erased LMU's oldest school record in the 1650 free, placing eighth in the event with a time of 18:01.78. Rebecca Plume was 14th with a personal best time of 18:11.28.

LMU had seven finalists in the 100 freestyle, which resulted to 68.5 points in that event. Alex Wike was the fastest Lion with a fifth place finish in 53.05. Wike had earlier posted a personal best in the preliminary heats of 52.78. Liz Magura placed 11th in the event with a 53.33, followed closely by Maggie Brophy with a 53.40. Senior Amanda Luciano closed out her collegiate career with a 55.1 in the bonus consolation heat.

In the 200 breaststroke, senior Morgan Finley placed third with a new LMU record time of 2:23.50. That was the third personal best for her in the meet, and her last as a Lion. Junior Alyssa Geraghty also swam a personal best in the event, placing 13th with a time of 2:27.66.

The final individual event of the night was a great one for the Lions in the 200 fly. Trinity O'Neill placed fourth with a new program record of 2:05.72, breaking her existing record that she set last fall by over a second. Angela Samuels won the consolation final for ninth place with a 2:08.77, also a personal best. She was followed closely by Melanie Tansuwan in 10th place with a personal best of 2:09.51.

There was a short Senior Recognition Ceremony before the final relay in which LMU seniors Finley, Luciano, and Mathewson were recognized. Luciano received the additional recognition of being selected to the PCSC All-Academic team.

LMU placed third in the final event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay, with the team of Magura, Mathewson, Wike, and Witter, who anchored with an amazing split of 52.0.

"It will be hard, if not impossible, to replace the performances of our senior class next year, but we are still an improving team with incredible depth and character, so there is much to look forward to next season," Adair said. "I am just a little sad that this one is over because it's been such a great ride."
