Lions Sprint to Victory against Alaska Fairbanks, 117-87

FAIRBANKS, AK - Loyola Marymount swimming won five of the 11 races en route to a 117-87 victory over Alaska Fairbanks in the second dual meet of the weekend against the Nanooks on Sunday.

Sophomore Megan Sawelson won both the 50 and 100 Yard Freestyle, as the Lions rode their strength in sprinting throughout the two meets. Sawelson finished the 50 yard swim in 25.99 and the 100 yard in 56.25. Freshman Carolyn Pasque and junior Rebecca Plume took second and third in the 100 with times of 56.34 and 57.41, respectively. Pasque also took second in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 26.46, just in front of freshman teammate Kristen Hiller at 26.55.

The relay team of Mallorie Lim, Angela Samuels, Trinity O'Neill and Alex Wike finished second in the 200 Yard Medley, touching the wall just less than one second after the first place team at 1:55.55.

Plume took first place in the 1000 Yard Freestyle event, showing her strength in distance swimming as well, finishing the race in 11:02.47 which proved to be more than four seconds faster than the nearest competitor.

The Lions continued their dominance in the freestyle events when Wike won the 200 yard swim with a time of 2:01.91. Junior Danielle Garcia finished third in the race, touching the wall at 2:04.98.

O'Neill and senior Liz Magura took second and third in the 400 Yard IM with times of 4:53.27 and 4:57.32. Alaska freshman Mariya Pavlovskaya, who had an outstanding weekend against the Lions, took first in the race in 4:42.93.

LMU impressed in the short races once again when Melanie Tansuwan, Samuels and Katie Mistry took home the second through fourth places in the 100 Yard Butterfly event. Tansuwan finished in 1:02.96, while Samuels and Mistry recorded times of 1:03.34 and 1:05.01, in that order. The same trend followed in the 100 Yard Backstroke, with Hiller (1:04.89), Kristen Lutjen (1:04.95) and Lim (1:05.73) finishing second, third and fourth.

Samuels placed second with a time of 1:11.58 in the 100 Yard Breaststroke before Tansuwan, Lim, Garcia and Plume teamed to take first in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay in 3:46.22.

LMU will return to action on October 27 to take part in the Malibu Invitational hosted by Pepperdine at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
