MALIBU, Calif. - Coming off a very successful week last week at Seattle University and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Loyola Marymount swimming continued to swim well at the Malibu Invitational on Saturday at Pepperdine's Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
Sophomore Mallorie Lim got things started in the 50 yard Butterfly, finishing the race in :26.89 to claim third place behind Pepperdine's Ali Mcleod and Gloria Benefield. Senior Angela Samuels (:27.83) finished 16th in the sprint and sophomore Megan Sawelson rounded-out the Lions in the top-20 with a time of :28.35, good for 20th.
Junior Alex Wike took home the best time for LMU in the 50 yard Backstroke, touching the wall in :28.98 to finish fifth. The Lions also claimed the eighth through 11th spots in the race, with seniors Alicia Royal (:29.45) and Kim McKay (:29.52), sophomore Alicia Witter (:29. 58) and sophomore Melanie Tansuwan (:29.68) finishing in those spots, respectively. Freshman Aja Kusao finished 14th on the list with a time of :30.02 to round out the top-20 LMU swimmers in that event.
Four LMU swimmers placed in the top-20 in the 50 yard Breaststroke, with freshman Carolyn Pasque finishing 10th in :33.43. Teammate Alyssa Geraghty touched the wall just behind Pasque at :33.44 and junior Justine Elgas finished 13th in :33.67. Freshman Maeghan Cobbin placed 17th in the event, finishing the race in :34.29.
Sawelson finished in the top-10 in the 50 yard Freestyle competition, touching the wall in :25.22 to claim 10th on the list. Kusao finished two spots later at :25.56 before a trio composed of Witter (:25.79), Samuels (:25.86) and senior Liz Magura (:25.89) finished 17th, 18th and 19th.
Lim was back at it again in the 100 yard Butterfly, finishing fourth over the span in :59.89. McKay finished the race in 1:02.56 to claim 14th, junior Gillian Ghazal placed 15th in 1:02.57 and sophomore Trinity O'Neill touched in 1:03.07, good for 17th on the list.
Freshman Kristen Hiller took home the Lions' best time in the 100 yard Backstroke event, finishing sixth with a time of 1:04.38. McKay swam an impressive 1:04.39 to claim the seventh position, just a split second behind Hiller. Royal followed in ninth place with a time of 1:04.88 and Samuels (1:05.65) finished in 12th. Magura and junior Rebecca Plume posted times of 1:07.40 and 1:08.79 to claim 14th and 18th, respectively.
The 100 yard Breaststroke saw Geraghty finish in eighth with a time of 1:11.21 and Pasque touch the wall in 1:13.03 to claim the 12th place on the list. Elgas was the next Lion to finish, posting a time of 1:13.99, which was good for 15th in the race. Danielle Garcia (1:15.13) and Cobbin (1:16.13) finished 18th and 20th to round out the top-20 Lion performers.
The Lions had one swimmer finish in the top-10 in the 100 yard Freestyle. Kusao touched in :55.47 to claim the seventh spot on the list in that event. Witter finished 13th in a time of :55.84 and Magura took home 17th in :56.66.
McKay and Pasque finished 10th and 11th in the 200 yard Individual Medley with times of 2:18.61 and 2:19.86, respectively. Garcia finished the race in 15th with a time of 2:21.42 and Julia Hall placed 17th in 2:25.52. Geraghty rounded out the top-20 swimmers in the event, touching the wall in 2:29.73 to take 20th.
The LMU "A" team took first in the 300 yard Freestyle Relay, finishing in 2:30.27 to edge host Pepperdine at 2:30.34. LMU "B" claimed sixth place in the race, finishing the relay in 2:35.38 and LMU "C" rounded out the top-10 in 10th with a time of 2:45.14.
Ghazal started the distance events off for LMU, finishing the 200 yard Butterfly in 2:18.95 to claim 10th place. Katie Carmody placed 15th in the event, touching the wall in 2:23.43.
McKay was the top LMU finisher in the 200 yard Backstroke, finishing fifth in 2:19.03, just ahead of the sixth place finisher at 2:19.15. Nicole Alvarado finished 16th in the event, turning in a time of 2:29.51.
Elgas and Cobbin finished 10th and 13th in the 200 yard Breaststroke event, recording times of 2:39.80 and 2:49.57, respectively. Ghazal and Kusao finished in the top-15 of the 200 yard Freestyle event, with Ghazal finishing 13th in 2:02.85 and Kusao placing 14th in 2:03.64.
McKay and Hall took home the 10th and 11th spots in the 400 yard Individual Medley with times of 4:57.73 and 5:00.61, in that order. Carmody and Morgan Ridgeway also competed in the event, touching the wall in 5:11.49 and 5:22.32.
LMU will return to the water on Saturday, November 3 at the Big West Shootout in Irvine, Calif.
