Malibu, Calif. - Katie Hicks and Liz Magura led Loyola Marymount at the Malibu Invitational this weekend, earning the titles of sprint and distance high point winners for the Lions. The invitational features three competitions and names a high point winner in the sprint and distance competitions for each participating school.
LMU dominated the sprint races, winning six of the eight events. The Lions also won two distance and two relay events, making LMU the winner of 10 of the competition's 16 events.
Lauren Mathewson, Hicks, and Sarah Hamilton each had double wins in the morning sprint events. Mathewson won the 50 and 100 backstroke, Hamilton won the 50 and 100 breaststroke, and Hicks the 50 and 100 free. Hicks added a third victory in the afternoon by edging teammate Maggie Brophy in the 200 free, continuing her undefeated streak from last season in freestyle events. Kim McKay made the 200 free a Lion sweep by taking third place in the event.
Hicks was the sprint high point winner with her victories in the 50 and 100 freestyle and fourth and fifth place finishes in the 50 and 100 fly.
Magura earned a victory in the 200 IM and was the distance high point winner for LMU. McKay followed in second place.
Fellow sophomore Angela Samuels returned to competition for the first time since shoulder surgery last April and finished a closed second to Hamilton in the 50 breaststroke. She was also the leading Lion in the 50 and 100 butterfly events, finishing third in both of those events.
