Los Angeles, Calif. - For the second straight year, Loyola Marymount won two of three competitions at the LMU Pentathlon Saturday at the Burns Aquatics Center on the LMU campus. Katie Hicks claimed the short medley title, while Maggie Brophy won the freestyle competition crown.
LMU hosted Pepperdine and Cal State Northridge for Saturday's Pentathlon, in which each swimmer individually entered one of the three competitions: the short medley, long medley, or freestyle. Each competition included five races, with the swimmers' times being added from each of their five races. Within each competition, the swimmer with the lowest time was declared the winner.
Hicks earned the short medley crown with a total time of 2:53.01 after winning the 100 IM (1:00.53) and the 50 free (24.63).
Brophy claimed the freestyle competition title for the second straight year with a total time of 14:57.30 (14:57.80 in 2004). Within her competition, Brophy won the 200 free (1.55.97) and the 500 free (5:09.89).
Fellow sophomore Liz Magura was the top Lion finisher in the long medley events for the second straight season. Her total time of 6:23.38 was good for third place behind leaders Haley Wilson and Ali McLeod of Pepperdine.
Sanda Jukic was the top finisher for Cal State Northridge, taking second in the freestyle events.
Other top LMU performances included Lauren Mathewson's first place finish in the 50 backstroke with a time of 27.58. Angela Samuels, last year's sprint medley champion, finished second in the 50 butterfly (26.85), third in the 50 breaststroke (31.22), and third in the 100 IM (1:03.01). Morgan Finley took second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.85, while Sarah Hamilton finished second in the 50 breaststoke in 30.92. Kim McKay's time of 1:02.10 in the 100 backstroke was good for third place.
