Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount swimming claimed two of the three competitions at the LMU Pentathlon Saturday morning at the Burns Aquatic Center. Freshmen Angela Samuels and Maggie Brophy won the short medley and the freestyle events respectively, while fellow rookie Liz Magura took second in the long medley events.
LMU hosted Pepperdine and Cal State Northridge for Saturday's Pentathlon, in which each swimmer individually entered one of the three competitions: the short medley, long medley, or freestyle. Each competition included five races, with the swimmers' times being added from each of their five races. Within each competition, the swimmer with the lowest time was declared the winner.
Samuels earned the short medley crown with a total time of 2:58.15 after winning the 50 butterfly (27.15) and the 50 free (25.30).
Brophy claimed the freestyle competition title with a total time of 14:57.80. Within her competition, Brophy won the 100 free with a time of 54.41. In addition, her time of 5:15.58 in the 500 free was good for a new LMU program record.
Magura finished second in what proved to be the tightest of the three competitions: the long medley. The freshman totaled 8:53.96 for her five races, just .09 behind CSUN's top finisher Melanie Cupitt. Magura earned the close runner-up spot by winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.08.
Other top LMU performances included freshman Alicia Royal who finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.51), sophomores Lauren Mathewson (28.38) and Amanda Luciano (29.71) who took first and second in the 50 backstroke, and sophomore Morgan Finley's third place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.55). Luciano also posted a third place finish in the 50 breast with a time of 32.65.
Up next for the Lions is the Speedo Invitational November 18-20 in Long Beach.
