Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount swimming will wrap up its historic regular season this Friday, with a final meet at the Burns Aquatic Center beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Lions will swim a double dual against San Diego State and Pepperdine.
LMU has posted a dramatic turnaround this season, taking a 2-30 dual record over the past three years to a 2-1 record this season with a third place finish at the CMS Invitational. Hosting its own LMU Pentathlon, the program also won two of three competitions with the sprint medley and freestyle event titles. The 2004-05 season also featured the program's first victory over the University of San Diego, along with numerous new school records.
Sophomores Katie Hicks and Lauren Mathewson have built impressive streaks heading into Friday's final regular season challenge, with Hicks going undefeated in dual competition individual events and Mathewson claiming every backstroke dual event title.
"Our five seniors, team captains Alex Tungland and Breanne Melconian, along with Bayley Diamond, Mandy Mooers and Maureen Sheehan, have not had many team victories here at LMU in their first three seasons and are finally part of a winning program," LMU Head Coach Bonnie Adair said. "They deserve to go out winners, because they are the ones who have helped build up this program with their determination, dedication and amazing leadership. The meet on January 28, which will be the last dual meet of their careers here at LMU, will be very emotional for all of us - I know it will be for me."
