Freshman Swimmer Has Olympic Distance Dreams

MIROMAR LAKES, Flor. - USD swimmer & 2008 Olympic hopeful Courtney Weigand is one of the top 20 open water distance swimmers in the United States, at the age of 17. Weigand recently placed 17th at the 10k open water trials with a time of 2:19:11.20 in Lake Como.

The 10k race started in the early morning under cloudy skies with a water temperature of 85° and an air temperature of 82° F and 74 percent humidity. The course consisted of four laps of close to 2.5k with a 400 meter straightaway sprint which led competitors to a finish chute off the main course. The man-made lake was marked by white directional buoys every 10 meters and orange turn buoys marked at the ends of the course.

Weigand, a freshman for the USD swimming and diving team, competed alongside the very best competition representing the U.S.A. in Beijing, China in 2008.The San Diego native and will look to improve upon her Olympic trial time while swimming for the USD Toreros this winter.
