Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount swimming continues its season this weekend, competing at the Speedo Cup, hosted by UC Irvine at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. The three-day meet boasts a competitive field, with over 20 teams participating, including third-ranked Stanford.
"LMU has never been able to break into the top-10 at the Speedo Cup," Head Coach Bonnie Adair said, "but we are hoping to be in the top-eight this year."
The Lions enter the competition with high hopes for both their relay teams and individuals. LMU earned top-eight seedings in the 200 free relay, 200 medley relay, and the 400 medley relay. Though an LMU individual swimmer has never qualified for the finals (top-eight), Katie Hicks is seeded 10th of 162 entrants in the 50 free and 12th of 197 in the 100 free. Defending PCSC Champion Lauren Mathewson is seeded 11th of 119 in the 100 backstroke and 24th of 162 in the 50 free.
Team points are awarded for individual finishes through 24th place. Other seeded Lions who will look to earn points for LMU include Maggie Brophy in the 200 and 500 freestyle, Liz Magura in the 200 and 400 IM, Angela Samuels in the 100 fly, Sarah Hamilton in the 100 breast, and Morgan Finley in the 100 and 200 breast. Adair is also looking for strong performances from the team's eight freshmen, who will be competiting in their first large collegiate meet.
Competition begins Thursday in Long Beach.
