Malibu, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's swimming and diving team concluded its first day of competition at the UCI Speedo Cup on Thursday, November 17 hosted by UC Irvine at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. The meet resumes Friday and action will conclude on Saturday.
The 2005 UCI Speedo Cup will feature 14 men's teams and 22 women's teams. Athletes from 13 NCAA Division I schools will be competing and a total of 735 athletes will compete in the three-day meet. The meet includes the Waves of Pepperdine, Stanford, BYU, Air Force, Colorado State, Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State, San Diego, Cal Poly, UC Davis, LMU, and host UC Irvine.
In the first day of action, junior Ali McLeod and freshman Haley Wilson placed in the Top 20 in the 200 IM with times of 2:08.28 and 2:09.26, respectively. In the 50 free, junior Heather Brehmer placed 27th with a time of 24.83. The Pepperdine `A' team took a tenth-place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:38.66.
Friday's events include the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and the 800 free relay. Complete results can be found at http://www.swim.uci.edu/2005speedocup.html.
