LONG BEACH, Calif. - After one complete day of competition, Loyola Marymount swimming sits in fourth place of 23 teams at the annual UC Irvine Speedo Cup held at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif. Five events into the three-day meet, the Lions got their biggest boost of the day from the 50 freestyle.
LMU totaled 171.5 points in day one's five events. Of the 23 women's teams participating, the Lions only trail BYU, top-ranked UC San Diego (DII), and the host Anteaters.
The 50 free earned LMU 56.5 points after Lion seniors Lauren Mathewson and Katie Hicks took second and third place, finishing within .02 seconds of each other. Mathewson finished second in 23.92, while Hicks took third with a 23.94.
O'Neill gave the Lions another 17 points with a 10th place finish in the 200 IM (2:08.71).
In addition to the top-4, the women's field also includes Air Force, USC, Colorado State, New Mexico, Northern Arizona, San Jose State, Pepperdine, San Diego, Cal State Northridge, Alaska-Fairbanks, Occidental, Redlands, La Verne, UC Santa Cruz, Chapman, Cal Baptist, Soka, and Cal Lutheran.
The Lions finished a program-best ninth place at the 2005 UCI Speedo Cup.The competition continues Friday and Saturday at Belmont Plaza.
