Malibu, Calif. - The No. 14 Pepperdine women's tennis team continued its win streak in season openers as it defeated Cal Poly, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. The Waves have opened the season with a win since 1980 and now own an 11-0 all-time record against the Mustangs.
In doubles, Sylvia Kosakowski and Eva Dickes got things started with an 8-5 win at court one over Carol Erickson and Steffi Wong. After Caroline Raba and Jillian Braverman lost 9-7 at No. 3 it was up to Pepperdine's two freshmen on court two to come through with the doubles point.
After trailing for most of the match, Cal Poly's duo of Diane Filip and Brittany Blalock tied the score at 8-all, but Katia Sabaté and Anete Bandere won the doubles point for Pepperdine in the tiebreaker.
The Waves (1-0) took a 2-0 lead when Dickes quickly put away Maria Malec 6-1, 6-0 at position four. After falling 6-2 in the first set, Raba turned things around to take the second and third set 6-0, 6-2.
At No. 1 singles, Kosakowski defeated Erickson 6-3 in the first set and just when it looked like the match would take three sets to decide, the junior came from behind to clinch the match with a 7-6 win over Erickson.
The final three matches involved three Wave newcomers who all proved their talent on the court. At No. 6, Bandere handed Shannon Brady a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 defeat, while Braverman defeated Filip 6-2, 7-6 at court five. After losing 6-2 in the first set, Sabate came back to give the Waves their final point with a two 6-4 wins over Blalock.
Pepperdine is back in action on Friday, Jan. 26 when it hosts UC Irvine in a 1:30 p.m. match.
