Women's Tennis Fall In First Spring Match

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened the 2007 spring season with a 7-0 loss to No. 66 Washington State University Saturday at the Hollingberry Fieldhouse in Pullman, Wash.

The Bulldogs fell behind early, losing the doubles point when all three GU duos were unable to knock off the Cougars. Playing at No. 1, WSU's Ekaterina Burduli and Marjolein van de Ven defeated GU's Emily Anderson and Kendall Bates, while Bianca Selaru and Aleksandra Stefanoya of WSU clinched the doubles point with an 8-1 victory over Kimberly Aigner and Carrie Schofield at the No. 3 position. The Zags were unable to avoid the sweep when Sydney Lederhouse and Aglaya Kokurina fell at the No. 2 slot 8-5 to Amy Toth and Ashley Spicer.

Gonzaga was unable to recover in singles play, dropping all six matches in straight sets. Earning the first singles point was WSU's Selrau after defeating GU's Schofield 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Bates then fell to van de Ven 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 3 position to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. At No. 1 Anderson fell 6-1, 6-3 to Burduli, who is ranked No. 85 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, to clinch the victory for Washington State. Lederhouse was unable to stop the Cougars, falling at No. 2 to Toth 6-1, 6-1. Aigner fell 6-2, 6-2 to Spicer at No. 6 and Kokurina fell at No. 5 to Stefanoya 6-0, 6-4.

The Zags will hit the courts again Saturday, February 2, when they host West Coast Conference opponent Portland at 1 p.m. The match will be held at the Spokane Racquet Club.
