SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team opened its spring campaign with a 6-1 loss to No. 73 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon. Kim Daniel won her singles match to earn the Broncos their only point in the match. All three doubles matches went down to the wire with the Gauchos able to pull them out at the end.
Daniel won her 42nd career singles match, defeating Brittany Kausen 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position. With the win, Daniel ties teammate Casey Knutson for ninth all-time in singles wins in school history. Myra Davoudi at No. 2 and Lindsay McBride at No. 3 also played strong singles matches but could not come up with a win. Davoudi fell 7-6 (3), 7-5 to Marta Simic, while McBride fell in the day's only three-setter 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Charlotte Scatliffe.
"Everyone competed very well today and we showed that we are right there with a nationally-ranked team," said head coach Ben Cabell. "We had chances in two out of the three doubles matches and a number of tight singles matches. We just have to go back to practice and work on a couple of things and we will be ready for next week."
In doubles the No. 1 team of Casey Knutson and Erika Barnes pushed Marta Simic and Charlotte Scatliffe to a tiebreaker before falling 9-8 (8-6), while McBride and Davoudi narrowly lost 9-7 to Tova Hausman and Carina Bjornstrom. Those two performances demonstrated that the Broncos are ready to compete with the best in doubles this spring.
The Bronco women next take to the court on Saturday, Feb. 10 against the University of Pacific. The dual match will begin at 1:00 p.m. PT in Stockton.
