San Luis Obispo, CA - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team played in their second straight road match today and won for the second straight time. The Gales improved to 2-0 on the road and 3-0 overall.
The match jumped right into singles play due to the weather. Doubles matches are normally played first, but the singles matches came first today for fear of rain.
With the threat of rain the Gaels manage to quickly close the door on their opponent. Newcomer Marah Calvo blanked her opponent in two sets winning 6-0, 6-0. Erin Young also won her match in two sets 6-3, 6-3. Aude Lambert faced off against Cal Poly's Carol Erickson, to whom she lost in the fall. Lambert responded today by winning her match in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
The Gaels were now up on Cal Poly 3-2 with a chance to seal the deal. Just as fate would have it; yesterday Nienke Stijbis recorded the game winning match and today it would be twin sister Femke Strijbis's chance. Femke lost her first match 4-6 and was down match point in the second set. Femke saved match point and went onto win the game and the set 7-5. With that behind her Femke was able to breeze through the third set 6-1 to give the Gaels their third straight win.
The Gaels will return to action February 16 when they face conference opponent Gonzaga at 3:00 p.m. from the Korth Tennis Complex.
