MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 13 Pepperdine women's tennis team fell to No. 24 Fresno State, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. Pepperdine fell to 4-3 on the season, while the Bulldogs improved to 3-2.
The Waves came out strong in doubles receiving wins at No. 1 and No. 2 for the point. Eva Dickes and Sylvia Kosakowski handed Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova an 8-5 defeat, while Bianca Dulgheru and Katia Sabate blanked Vanessa Heroux and Tinesta Rowe, 8-0. Melanie Gloria and Danon Beatty edged the Wave duo of Jillian Braverman and Anete Bandere 8-6 at No. 3.
The Bulldogs responded by winning five of the six singles matches to upset the Waves. At No. 1 singles, fourth-ranked Bulldog Gloria defeated Dulgheru 6-2, 6-2. Kosakowski won the first set over No. 49 Kucerkova, 6-3, and just when it looked like the Waves would take the match, Kucerkova forced a third set after winning 7-6 in the second. Fresno State won the point after Kucerkova's 6-1 third-set victory.
After losing 7-5 in the first set, Dickes forced the third set with her 6-2 win over Heroux, but lost 6-1 in the final set. Bandere also lost in three sets, falling 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 to Beatty. No. 92 Rowe defeated Sabate in the super-breaker, 10-5, for the Bulldogs' fifth singles point.
Pepperdine's lone singles point came at No. 6 singles where Tania Rice dominated Bruna Paes 6-2, 6-1.
The Waves return to action on Fri., Feb. 16 when they make the short trip to cross-town and West Coast Conference rival Loyola Marymount. Action is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
