Two Zags Earn Singles Wins

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Kendall Bates and Aglaya Kokurina of the Gonzaga University women's tennis each won their respective singles matches Saturday, but it wasn't enough as the Zags fell to Santa Clara University 5-2 in Santa Clara, Calif.

With the loss GU drops to 2-3 and 0-3 in West Coast Conference play, while SCU improves to 1-2.

Playing in the No. 3 position Bates earned a straight-set victory over Lindsay McBride (6-3, 6-3). Kokurina, playing in the No. 4 spot, defeated Erika Barnes in tie breaker (4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8)). IN other singles action, Emily Anderson fell to Myra Davoudi in the No. 1 position (6-4, 6-2) and Sydney Lederhouse fell in the No. 2 spot to Casey Knutson (6-2, 6-0). Erin Humphrey played in the NO. 5 spot, falling to Kim Daniel (6-1, 6-4). Rounding out singles play was Carrie Schofield, playing No. 6, falling to Stephanie Galainena (6-1, 6-4).

The Broncos earned the doubles point, taking the No. 1 and 3 matches. At the No. 2 position, Lederhouse and Courtney Lau defeated the SCU duo of Galainena and McBride, 9-7. Anderson and Bates combined at No. 1, falling to Barnes and Knutson 8-3, while Kokurina and Schofield fell at No. 3 to Danile and Davoudi.

The Zags will return to the courts Sunday when they continue WCC play at the University of San Francisco. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
