Women's Tennis Defeats Hawaii

Feb. 25, 2007

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team won an unusual match today against Hawaii. The start time of the match was delayed three hours due to weather conditions. The match began at 2:00 pm in hopes of playing through the pocket of good weather. In the middle of singles play the rains came down and made the outdoor courts unplayable. The matches were picked up several hours later from an indoor location. The Gaels still managed to pull of the victory despite all this. Saint Mary's defeated Hawaii 5-1.

The competition went straight into singles matches due to the aforementioned weather. Marah Calvo won her match before the rains came down, winning 6-2, 6-3. Erin Young also managed to finish her match before the rains as well. She won her match 6-2, 6-1. No. 94 Femke Strijbis dropped her match 6-1, 6-2.

The rains then postponed the remaining matches several hours. When picked up Aude Lambert finished up her match. She had already won the first set and it only took a few games to take the second. She won the match 6-1, 6-3. Jessica Hoath was in a similar situation. She had already taken the first set earlier in the day. Later that evening she won the remaining games of the match, winning 6-4, 6-1.

Stef Ordoveza dropped her first set 3-6. She responded in impressive fashion by taking the next two sets 6-2, 6-2. The Gaels had then won their seventh straight match by a score of 5-1.

Saint Mary's returns to action Thursday, March 1 when they will jump the Bay to face WCC rival San Francisco.
