Lions Top #52 Boston College

March 4, 2006

Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount women's tennis defeated 52nd-ranked Boston College 4-3 Saturday at the LMU Tennis Center. The Lions used the doubles point and three singles victory to down the Eagles and improve to 5-5 on the season.

The Lions started the day by winning the doubles point after victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Patrycia Hubl and Erin Ivey staged a comeback at the second spot in doubles, as LMU threatened to sweep the doubles matches. But BC's Szilvia Szegedi and Alina Sullivan held on for the 8-6 win at No. 2.

"Winning the doubles point was a great way to start out," Head Coach Jamie Sanchez said. "The momentum was good going into singles play."

Sophomore Pavla Mesterova, who went undefeated in singles during February, earned her first March victory at the No. 1 spot to put the Lions up 2-0. Her 6-2, 6-1 win came over 74th-ranked Szegedi.

"Pavla played one of her best matches to beat Szegedi of Boston College," Sanchez said.

The pair of freshman in Sladjana Kos and Maja Sundac secured the victory for the Lions with the other two singles wins.

"We had a great day," Sanchez said. "We were competitive in every match."

The Lions will travel to Sacramento to face the 62nd-ranked Hornets of Sacramento State Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
