Lions Claim 5-1 Win

Santa Clara, CA (Mar. 7) - Reaching the midway point of their five-match road swing in the Bay Area, Loyola Marymount women's tennis earned a 5-1 win over West Coast Conference rival Santa Clara on Wednesday at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Lions improve to 5-4 on the season and 2-1 on the road trip.

Junior Pavla Mesterova won her fifth straight match at No. 1 singles over Myra Davoudi, 6-0, 6-0. She improves to 8-1 in her last 10 matches and 7-1 in dual match play on the season. She is 14-4 overall on the year.

Also earn wins at singles was senior Robyn Baker, senior Tamara Tanner and freshman Audrey Bulkley. Baker earned a hard fought 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles while Tanner earned her first dual match win of the season at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-3. For Bulkley, who joined the Lions at the start of the spring semester, she picks up her first win in dual match play at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-4.

Freshman Elrien de Villiers dropped her first match of the season at No. 5 singles in heartbreaking fashion, 4-6, 7-5 and 10-8 in the pro set tiebreaker. Senior Serena Fermin's match did not finish as it went 6-1, 4-6, 5-5.

The Lions started the match with a doubles point, as Baker and Mesterova improved to 3-0 in dual action with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Tanner and Fermin then took home the point with an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Bliss Nixon and de Villiers fell at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.
